Having a monthly budget is important because it gives you control over your money instead of wondering where it went. It helps you make better choices, prepare for emergencies, reduce stress, and work toward financial goals. A budget turns your income into a plan.

Experian is a common resource for free credit scores. No credit card required!
You can also get free weekly online credit reports on annualcreditreport.com from the three nationwide credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. This is the only official site explicitly directed by Federal law to provide free credit reports.
If you have credit cards with Chase, Bank of America, Capital One, or similar banks, you can access free credit reports directly through your online account dashboard.
Checking your credit score helps you understand how lenders see you and what financial options are available to you. It can affect things like getting approved for loans, renting a home, or even setting up utilities. Regularly checking your score also helps you catch errors or fraud early and gives you a chance to improve your credit over time.
For example, many landlords in Shasta County require applicants to earn at least three times the monthly rent and have a credit score of 680 or higher to qualify. Your credit score helps show whether you pay bills on time and manage money responsibly.
Knowing your score ahead of time helps you understand what housing options may be available to you, avoid surprises during applications, and take steps to improve your chances of being approved for permanent housing.
Many of the same rules apply when purchasing a vehicle. Lenders look closely at your credit score and your income to decide if you qualify for a loan and what interest rate you’ll get. Just like with housing, a higher credit score usually means better options—lower monthly payments, lower interest rates, and more choices.
If your credit score is low or your income isn’t high enough compared to the car payment, you may be denied, need a co-signer, or be offered a loan with much higher interest. Checking your credit ahead of time helps you plan, budget, and avoid taking on a payment that’s too hard to manage.
